Hiroshi Nomura is a Japanese photographer and artist born in Shizuoka in 1969. Trained in oil painting at Tokyo University of the Arts, he has worked across photography, drawing, manga, and fictional characters, creating works that shift the boundary between reality and fiction.
EXDORA is a series Nomura has been developing since the early 1990s. In these works, a strange black silhouette known as “Exdora” appears within real landscapes and everyday scenes, creating a subtle sense of displacement in otherwise familiar surroundings. Moving between photography, drawing, and narrative elements, the series has become one of Nomura’s long-running projects, inserting fiction into images of the real world.
In EXDORA RA, RA, RA, RA..., Exdora enters the landscape of Google Street View. Street corners, facilities, suburban views, and other anonymous urban images found online become settings in which this fictional figure quietly appears. As a result, actual places, recorded digital images, and an invented presence are layered together.
If the original EXDORA series inserted fiction into familiar surroundings, this book extends that method into the image environment of the Street View era. The handmade Japanese-style binding, sewn together like a traditional volume, also gives the book a distinctive physical presence. It is a compact expression of Nomura’s conceptual playfulness and his interest in the instability of photographic reality.
