Seiji Kurata is a photographer born in Tokyo in 1945. He completed the Workshop Photography School in 1976, and in 1980 received the 5th Kimura Ihei Photography Award for Flash Up: Street Photo Random Tokyo 1975–79.
Trans Asia is a photobook published by Ohta Publishing in 1995. It is composed of photographs taken across Asia, including the Philippines, Hong Kong, Mongolia, South Korea, Indonesia, Singapore, and Malaysia.
After Flash Up, in which Kurata captured the streets of Tokyo with powerful strobe light, this book brings together work from the period when he expanded his photographic field to Asia. Cities, streets, bodies, livestock, nature, and landscapes are presented in color across double-page spreads, capturing the heat, chaos, and human presence of each place through Kurata’s distinctive perspective.
