Takashi Homma is a photographer born in Tokyo in 1962. In 1999, he received the 24th Kimura Ihei Photography Award for Tokyo Suburbia, and has continued to photograph subjects such as cities, suburbs, architecture, the sea, and children.
New Documentary is an exhibition catalogue published in conjunction with the exhibition of the same title, which traveled to the 21st Century Museum of Contemporary Art, Kanazawa, and Tokyo Opera City Art Gallery in 2011. Held as Homma’s first solo exhibition at a museum in Japan, the exhibition focused not only on photographic prints, but also on the ways photography can be presented, including books, silkscreens, video, and installations.
In addition to plates from various series, the book includes a section introducing Homma’s photobooks to date, as well as a chronology, exhibition history, filmography, and list of major publications. Through both works and texts, this volume traces Homma’s approach to photography, which he refers to as “New Documentary.”
