Film Nostalgia was published in conjunction with Nobuyoshi Araki’s 2011 exhibition of the same name at Taka Ishii Gallery. The exhibition presented around 600 new works from eleven different series, while the book brings together 408 images in a limited edition of 500 copies.
After surviving prostate cancer and confronting his own mortality through his work, Araki experienced the death of his beloved cat Chiro in 2010. The book includes It Was Once a Paradise, photographs of the balcony where he had shared meals with his wife Yoko and where Chiro once played, alongside images shaped by memories of happiness, childhood, and time already passed. As Araki himself expressed at the time, nostalgia had become inseparable from life itself.
Taking the name “Photo-Maniac Old Man A” in reference to Hokusai’s self-description as a “painting maniac,” Araki continued to work deliberately with film in an increasingly digital era. The resulting book brings together memory, loss, life, death, and the act of photographing itself.
