Meitoku Itoh was a photographer based on the Chita Peninsula in Aichi Prefecture. He pursued landscape expression through black-and-white photography and is known for his distinctive print work.
Original Sight, 100 was published by the Nikkor Club in 1987 as Volume 14 of the Nikon Salon Books series. The book contains 100 black-and-white photographs, mainly taken in port towns on the Chita Peninsula.
While depicting everyday scenes, Itoh’s photographs emphasize light and shadow through extensive darkroom burning, layering the artist’s inner vision onto real landscapes. Port towns, alleyways, the seaside, people, and traces of local festivals emerge with dense, atmospheric contrasts throughout the book.
Includes texts by Jun Morinaga, Shigeichi Nagano, and Shinichi Kusamori, as well as a reportage piece by Shinji Honda.
