Tatsuyuki Yokokawa is a photographer who has also worked under the name Papa-chat Yokokawa. Walking through the city, he has collected images of people, objects, signs, buildings, and street corners, turning these fragments of Tokyo into book form.
Tokyo, des boites d’allumettes is composed of photographs taken in Tokyo during the 1970s and 1980s. As the title suggests, the book gathers small urban fragments like matchboxes: faces of the city, people on the street, shopfronts, signs, and everyday scenes.
The book includes introductory texts in Japanese and French and was produced as a hardcover volume with a slipcase. Through a sequence of fragmentary snapshots, it traces the memory of Tokyo as it once appeared.
