Daisuke Yokota is a Japanese photographer born in 1983. His work often incorporates the photographic process itself, using development, scanning, rephotographing, printing, repetition, and degradation as active elements in the making of the image.
Back Yard is one of Yokota’s key early self-published works. First presented in zine form in 2011, the book was made through methods involving heated development and the scanning of images, foregrounding the process by which photographs are generated and transformed.
Deep blacks, heavy grain, blurred figures, landscapes, and abstracted images unfold throughout the book, creating the sensation of memories being copied, repeated, and altered over time. Back Yard stands as an important early work that helped bring Yokota’s practice to wider attention in Japan and abroad.
