Rinko Kawauchi is a photographer born in Shiga Prefecture in 1972. With a delicate eye for light, signs of life, and the passage of time within the everyday, she has received international acclaim for photobooks such as Utatane, Hanabi, and Illuminance.
Light and Shadow is a work created after Kawauchi visited Tohoku following the Great East Japan Earthquake in 2011. The book is composed of photographs made through her reflections on the coexistence of opposing ideas such as life and death, light and shadow, prompted by a pair of white and black doves she encountered in an area affected by the tsunami.
Rather than depicting the disaster directly, the book turns a quiet gaze toward loss and regeneration, and the cycle of life that exists throughout the world. Through Kawauchi’s delicate vision and rich use of color, it brings out small miracles and signs of hope found within the everyday.
