Rasen Kaigan | notebook was published as the catalogue for Lieko Shiga’s exhibition Rasen Kaigan, held at Sendai Mediatheque from 2012 to 2013. Centered on the records of a series of ten lectures held at the museum’s “Thinking Table” between June 2011 and March 2012, the book also includes contributed essays and photographs of the exhibition space.
Through Shiga’s own words, the book traces the background and process behind the Rasen Kaigan project, which she developed after moving to Kitakama in Natori, Miyagi Prefecture, and working in close relation with the local community. With numerous illustrations, it records her thoughts on photography, place, the body, memory, and time after the earthquake and tsunami.
If Rasen Kaigan | album can be seen as the work volume of the project, this book may be understood as its text-based counterpart, documenting the thinking and process behind it.
