Mew Imashuku is an artist working across poetry, performance, and media art. Through practices that explore the body, language, and relationships with others, she creates works that unsettle the boundaries between the self and the world.
Kumonodaira Plateau is an artist’s book of poetry and photography that emerged from time spent in Kumonodaira, a remote plateau deep in the Northern Japanese Alps. Accessible only after a two-day mountain journey, the landscape left impressions on the body that gradually crystallised into words and images, carrying traces of the scenery, sensations, and memories experienced there.
The entire book is constructed as an accordion fold, with poetry printed on one side and photographs on the other. Because the two cannot be viewed simultaneously, the structure creates an experience of moving back and forth between reading and looking, memory and landscape. The peaks and valleys of the folded pages also evoke the rhythm of travelling through the mountains, allowing the book’s physical form to quietly resonate with its subject.
A work in which mountain time, bodily sensation, and the distance between human beings and nature are layered together.
