João Pina is a documentary photographer from Portugal. Working primarily in Latin America, he has developed long-term projects dealing with history, social issues, and human rights, and has published his work in international media.
46750 is a photobook composed of photographs taken in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, between 2007 and 2016. The title “46,750” refers to the number of homicides that occurred in the Rio de Janeiro metropolitan area over that ten-year period.
As the city underwent major changes in the lead-up to the 2014 FIFA World Cup and the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Olympics, Pina documented the violence, inequality, relationship between the police and residents, and everyday life that existed behind its surface image. Poems by Brazilian poet Viviane Salles are inserted throughout the book.
