Alejandro Cartagena is a photographer based in Monterrey, Mexico. His work has consistently explored themes such as urban development, labor, migration, and social structures.
This book features Carpoolers, one of Cartagena’s best-known works, which captures workers in northern Mexico from above as they commute in the beds of pickup trucks. Set against the backdrop of rapidly urbanizing suburbs, the work depicts the relationships between labor and movement, and between the city and its peripheries. Through a striking series of photographs taken from an overhead perspective, the book quietly reveals a part of the social structures hidden within the contemporary city.
