Hiroshi Nomura is a Japanese photographer and artist born in Shizuoka in 1969. Trained in oil painting at Tokyo University of the Arts, he has worked across photography, drawing, manga, and fictional characters, creating works that shift the boundary between reality and fiction.
EXDORA is a series Nomura has been developing since the early 1990s. In these works, a strange black silhouette known as “Exdora” appears within real landscapes and everyday scenes, creating a subtle sense of displacement in otherwise familiar surroundings.
Exdora crossed the street view @ SO BOOKS was produced in conjunction with Nomura’s 2013 exhibition of the same name at SO BOOKS in Yoyogi-Hachiman, Tokyo. Based on Google Street View images of the area around SO BOOKS and Yoyogi-koen Station, the book shows Exdora appearing in various corners of the surrounding streets.
If the original EXDORA series inserted fiction into real-world scenery, this work extends that approach into the digital urban image environment of Street View. Although modest in format, it connects the exhibition space with a site-specific survey of its surroundings, making it an intriguing development within the EXDORA series.
