Alex Prager is a photographer and filmmaker based in Los Angeles. Using cinematic staging, color, costumes, and sets, she creates scenes that contain a sense of unease or strangeness within the everyday.
Face in the Crowd is a photobook published in conjunction with the exhibition of the same title, held at the Corcoran Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C., in 2013. Set in public spaces such as airports, lobbies, beaches, and movie theaters, the series is composed of photographs in which numerous costumed actors are arranged to depict the expressions and relationships of individuals within a crowd.
Prager’s photographs appear at first to show scenes from real life, yet they carry the tension of a carefully staged moment from a film. Through the gazes and gestures of each person within the crowd, the work brings out feelings of solitude, anxiety, and distance from others within public space.
In addition to the photographs, the exhibition also presented a three-channel video installation featuring Elizabeth Banks. Published by the Corcoran Gallery of Art and Alex Prager. Limited edition of 1,200 copies.
