flora japonica is a photo-fiction work by Bruno Quinquet. The title refers to “flora japonica,” or a flora of Japan, and the project unfolds around the members of BEJ, an old-school research center in Tokyo devoted to plant photography.

The work is structured as a horizontal digital publication, like an illustrated handscroll. Plant photography, narrative, humor, and fiction about the act of image-making are layered together. Through characters such as BOSS, the assistant Ashisu Tanto, the new recruit Haru-chan, the botanist Jiji Sensei, and a photo critic, the project turns the making of a botanical survey into a playful story about photography itself.

This item is a set of two images developed from the world of flora japonica. What first appears to be a serious act of documenting plants is gently shifted by Quinquet’s characteristic sense of observation, play, and fiction.
