Naoki Ishikawa is a photographer whose work is informed by an interest in anthropology and folklore, and who has explored themes of travel, movement, and the relationship between nature and human beings. He has visited high mountains and remote regions around the world, continuing to record his experiences through both photography and writing.

Lhotse is a photobook documenting Ishikawa’s climb of Lhotse in the Himalayas. Located next to Mount Everest, Lhotse is an 8,516-meter peak, and this book is composed primarily of photographs taken during his expedition in the spring of 2013.

According to the exhibition text by SLANT, Ishikawa was drawn to Lhotse after seeing it before him during his second ascent of Everest in 2011, leading him to set out for the mountain in the spring of 2013. The book brings together images of glaciers, rock faces, high-altitude landscapes, the people encountered along the way, and the passage of time in the mountains.
