Mao Ishikawa is a photographer born in Okinawa in 1953. Based in Okinawa, she has documented issues surrounding U.S. military bases and the lives of marginalized people, often working from deep within the communities she photographs.
This book brings together Life in Philly, a series Ishikawa photographed during her stay in Philadelphia in 1986. Visiting a former U.S. soldier she had met in Okinawa, she captured scenes of everyday life, family, and friendship within an African American community from an intimate distance. Born from a deep relationship of trust with her subjects, these photographs vividly convey the strength of human life beyond their social context.
