Jana Hartmann is a visual artist based in Frankfurt, Germany. Drawing on contemporary science and philosophical questions, she creates works that explore the relationship between humans and nature.
Mastering the Elements is a photobook that deals with the history of humanity’s attempts to understand and control nature, from the beginnings of alchemy to modern science. Hartmann photographs scientific experiments, displays in natural history museums, and natural objects, combining these images with quotations from alchemical texts and scientific papers, as well as texts that include ethical perspectives.
While scientific discoveries have had a major impact on society and individual lives, research itself is also inseparable from the eras, societies, and commercial or political interests that surround it. Tracing the history of scientific inquiry into nature, this book also turns its attention to questions of how contemporary research and technology should be handled.
