Stephen Gill is a British photographer born in 1971. Working primarily in East London, he is known for capturing everyday landscapes and traces left in places through distinctive methods that incorporate the materiality and chance elements of photography.
This book is a special edition by Stephen Gill, published as part of a charity project organized after the Great East Japan Earthquake in 2011. It was produced by G/P Gallery and Artbeat Publishers.
The included work, Outside In, is one of Gill’s representative series made in East London. By layering images of familiar landscapes with plants, insects, and various materials collected on site, Gill creates distinctive images in which the real landscape and foreign elements merge. The series is highly regarded as an experimental work that expands the possibilities of the photographic medium.
Although a small booklet, it offers a condensed sense of the artist’s world. It is also an interesting publication as a work born from a charity project in Japan.
