Susan Meiselas is an American documentary photographer. Since the 1970s, she has presented projects such as Carnival Strippers and her coverage of the Nicaraguan Revolution, and has also worked as a member of Magnum Photos.
Prince Street Girls is a book bringing together a series of photographs of girls who gathered around Prince Street in Little Italy, New York. The project began in 1975, when Meiselas, riding her bicycle through the neighborhood, encountered a group of girls playing by reflecting sunlight with a hand mirror.
Through repeated chance encounters with the girls, who gathered day after day on the same street corner, the series records the passage from childhood into adolescence, the relationships among friends, and everyday life in Little Italy at the time. It also conveys the intimacy fostered within a small street and the gradual shifts in distance between the photographer and her subjects.
