Taisuke Nakano is a Tokyo-based photographer. He was awarded the Grand Prix at the 18th 1_WALL Photography Competition in 2018, received an Excellence Award at the 44th New Cosmos of Photography in 2021, and won the Grand Prix at the 5th Fugensha Photography Award in 2025. He is one of the most closely watched emerging photographers working in Japan today.
Spin around the Night Consumed by the Fire began when Nakano discovered that the perpetrator of a murder committed during a “gay-bashing” attack in 2000 shared his exact name. As he walked through the locations connected to the crime and conducted extensive research and interviews, a web of associations gradually unfolded, blurring the boundaries between reality and imagination, life and death, self and other, and straight and gay identities.
Published after winning the Grand Prix at the 5th Fugensha Photography Award, the book was designed by Aaron Nieh, one of Taiwan’s leading graphic designers. Across 248 pages, sequences of images exploring desire, memory, the body, and loss are brought together in the form of an experimental photobook.
