Miyako Ishiuchi is one of the leading figures of postwar Japanese photography. From her early works rooted in Yokosuka to later projects exploring the body, memory, and the traces of time, she has consistently looked at places where personal memory and history intersect.

This book is centered on images from Yokosuka Story, one of Ishiuchi’s early landmark works, photographed in Yokosuka between 1976 and 1980. Capturing the landscapes and young people of a city shaped by the presence of U.S. military bases, the work reflects the artist’s own physical and emotional relationship to the place.

While documenting the everyday life of a city often positioned at the margins of postwar Japanese society, the book also reveals the emergence of key themes that would continue throughout Ishiuchi’s work, including memory, place, and a distinctly female perspective. It also includes a text by film director and screenwriter Miwa Nishikawa.
