Kohei Yoshiyuki was a photographer born in Hiroshima in 1946. He is known for works set in 1970s Tokyo that capture the city at night, human desire, and the relationships between seeing and being seen with a distinctive sense of distance.
This book presents The Park, Yoshiyuki’s best-known work. Photographed at night in the early 1970s in parks in Shinjuku, Yoyogi, and Aoyama, the series records couples gathering in the darkness, as well as the people watching them, using infrared film and an infrared flash.
Interweaving private acts, the dynamics of looking and being looked at, and the anonymity of the city, the work made a strong impact from the time of its first presentation and occupies a singular position in the history of Japanese photography. This volume also includes a text by Vince Aletti and an interview with Kohei Yoshiyuki by Nobuyoshi Araki.
