Ryan McGinley is one of the leading contemporary photographers in the United States. His work focuses on subjects such as youth culture in New York, road trips, and people spending time in nature. In 2003, at the age of 25, he held a solo exhibition at the Whitney Museum of American Art.

Published by Rizzoli in 2012, Whistle for the Wind is McGinley’s first major monograph, offering a comprehensive overview of roughly twelve years of his work, from his early photographs taken in downtown New York to his summer road-trip series across the United States and studio portraits.

Capturing young bodies, movement, and a sense of liberation in nature through vivid colors and dynamic compositions, the photographs in this volume provide an important introduction to McGinley’s most iconic imagery. The book also includes texts by Chris Kraus and John Kelsey, as well as a conversation with filmmaker Gus Van Sant, offering a multifaceted look at the work and its background.
