How Shall We Greet the Sun follows the lives of young refugee and migrant women living in the Netherlands, including Faroq herself. Through photographs and texts, the book explores how they build new lives while continuing to carry memories, nostalgia, and the losses connected to the places they left behind.
While I Don’t Recognize Me in the Shadows emerged from Faroq’s own immediate experience of war, escape, and asylum, this later work expands toward the shared experiences of other women. Migration is not treated as something that ends upon arrival, but as an ongoing process in which home, memory, the body, relationships, and identity must continually be reconstructed.
The book was again designed by Sybren Kuiper (-SYB-). Photographs and writing are given equal weight, while pacing, negative space, paper, and folded textual elements shape the act of reading and looking. Faroq and SYB’s continued collaboration creates a clear connection between the two books not only in subject matter, but also through the physical language of the photobook.
If I Don’t Recognize Me in the Shadows records the urgency and instability of displacement, How Shall We Greet the Sun turns toward what follows: the slower, ongoing process of rebuilding a life while carrying the past into the present.
