Thana Faroq is a Yemeni-born photographer, writer, and educator based in the Netherlands. Through photography and text, her work explores displacement, memory, loss, belonging, and the ways identity is reshaped through migration.

I Don’t Recognize Me in the Shadows is Faroq’s first photobook, rooted in her own journey from war-torn Yemen to the Netherlands and in the encounters she experienced along the way. Through photographs and handwritten texts, the book moves through war, departure, separation from family, waiting, and the uncertainty of arriving in a new country.

The book was designed by Sybren Kuiper (-SYB-). Its exposed Swiss binding, use of handwritten text, pacing, and layered page structure turn the physical book itself into part of the narrative, giving material form to Faroq’s fragmented memories and the instability of displacement.

While her later book How Shall We Greet the Sun turns toward the longer emotional aftermath of migration and the rebuilding of life after arrival, I Don’t Recognize Me in the Shadows remains rooted in the immediacy of movement itself.
